One week, 30 wheatears

August 10, 2010

After one week on Disko Island, we have caught 30 Greenland wheatears! We have fitted 14 of these with geolocators, with the aim of finding out more about the migration of these long-distance travellers.

The photo shows the stalk of a newly fitted geolocator on back of a Greenland wheatear. The stalk transmits light to a sensor. By retrapping the bird in a year’s time and downloading the data on light levels and time, the bird’s movements can be determined.
